Pediatric Dentist in NYC

Pediatric Dental Specialists vs. General Dentists

A pediatric dentist is a “children’s dentist” who has received additional postgraduate training. During this training, pediatric dentists learn how to approach best child treatment, especially when working with children who fear dentists. They also learn additional procedures to address developmental dental concerns like “pacifier teeth.”

Some children require special care from their pediatric dentists. Finding the best pediatric dentist in NYC may prevent problems with baby teeth and eliminate a lifelong fear of dentistry.

Unlike pediatric dentistry, family dentistry is not a specialty taught in dental school. Instead, a family dentist is a general dentist who treats children and adults. To become the best family dentist, one must desire to provide general dentistry to patients of all ages, have a personality suitable for entertaining a child on their first visit, and be able to have a serious conversation with an adult.

In addition, to become the best pediatric dental specialist, a family dentist must be versed in dental procedures and all stages of the child’s mouth development. A good family dentist can treat most children.

Book Your Appointment

Seeing a family dentist vs. a pediatric dentist in NYC for your family’s biannual check-up and cleaning is an easy decision since it does not require an additional trip. Instead, it becomes a whole family event. Make it even better, and follow it up with brunch or a trip to a museum on the weekend. Seeing a family dentist is an easy way to introduce the dentist into your child’s life; have them see you get a dental exam and cleaning.

Convenience is not the only concern that comes to mind when deciding on childcare. Consider the following factors when making such a decision:

  • Is your child cooperative with other adults and their pediatrician? If yes, going to a family dentist might be the right choice. If your child gets very uncomfortable, nervous, and uncooperative, seeing an NYC pediatric dentist and getting treatment under nitrate anesthesia could be a more suitable option in this case, at least until your child outgrows their fears.
  • What are the doctor’s working hours? When we choose a doctor or a dentist, we usually think long-term. Your child will start attending school at age five, so pulling your kid out of school for a visit with a pediatric dental specialist may not be possible. If you are a working parent, you must also consider your schedule and commute. Late hours and weekends may be the most suitable options for your family. Look for a pediatric dentist who is open on Saturday or Sunday.
  • Dental emergencies happen not only to adults. Children are more active, play more sports, and may still be in the developmental stages of physical dexterity. These factors, unfortunately, may contribute to children’s dental emergencies that often result in a broken tooth or a knocked-out tooth. Warm water rinses and cold compresses are only interim solutions until you find an emergency pediatric dentist in NYC. Make sure that your dentist is available for dental emergency visits.
  • Dental insurance is often a factor when choosing a doctor. Many pediatric dental specialists do not accept dental insurance. Ask the dentist if your insurance is accepted or if they will file the paperwork on your behalf so you do not need to worry about it.
  • Location! Traveling with a little one or the whole family may become a difficult chore. Do not overlook it. Find a location that works.

What Happens During a Family Dental Check-Up?

An infographic discussing why to visit a family dentist

“A stitch in time saves nine. ” We foster disease prevention by offering biannual exams and cleanings, complete home care, and diet instructions. We examine the whole person, including medical histories, stress levels, and exercise routines. We want all our patients to be healthy and happy.

209 NYC Dental is home to the best family and pediatric dentists in NYC who provide the most thorough dental check-ups to help ensure any oral health issues are caught in their earliest and most treatable stages. Both adult and pediatric check-ups begin with a medical history to look for any problems that could increase the risk of dental diseases, including diabetes, which can increase the chances of both tooth decay and gum disease.

Adult Dental Exam and Cleaning

Adult patients will be asked about any symptoms or problems they’ve been experiencing. Similarly to how our NYC pediatric dentists operate, an adult check-up will begin with a visual examination of the teeth and gums, followed by a cleaning and possibly dental X-rays. Dental X-rays are typically taken once a year, but if necessary, a single X-ray of the area in question may be taken.

Next, each tooth will be carefully evaluated for signs of decay, and your gums will be examined for gum disease. An oral cancer screening will also be performed. Then, you’ll learn about any problems you’re facing and your treatment options; of course, you’ll have plenty of time to ask questions.

Finally, you will be instructed on how to brush, what toothbrush to use, and how to rinse and floss. We will go over your diet, exercise, and, if appropriate, the elimination of unwanted habits such as smoking and excessive drinking.

Check-ups and Cleaning Visits With an NYC Pediatric Dentist

In a playful manner, our pediatric dental specialists will perform a dental exam to evaluate your child for developmental milestones, dental caries, or any pathologies. After that, if your child is old enough, he will perform a dental cleaning with a prophy paste, a brush that “tickles,” and a fluoride treatment to make teeth “super strong.” The dentist will review his findings and advise you on the home care. Sealants may be required to strengthen your child’s teeth.

Please be aware that depending on your child’s demeanor, we may suggest that a parent stay outside of the treatment room. At times, kids will feel braver and more responsive to our pediatric dental specialists if the parent is out of sight.

You can schedule your child’s visit with one of our Manhattan pediatric dentists during Saturday & Sunday hours in addition to the weekdays.

FAQs

How can you prepare your child to visit a pediatric dentist in NYC?

An infographic discussing how to prepare a child to visit a pediatric dental specialist

There are few things a parent can do to ease the angst of the children’s dentist visit. Role-playing “dentist-patient” is an excellent way to prepare your child for the upcoming appointment. Count each other’s teeth while looking in the mirror.

Another great tip for parents with children preparing to visit a pediatric dentist in Manhattan is to frame this appointment as something to be excited about. There’s nothing wrong with a parent having dental anxiety. However, you don’t want to instill these same fears in your children.

When should you have a baby’s first dental visit?

According to the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, AAPD, the first visit to a pediatric dentist in NYC should take place at the age of one or when the first tooth erupts. If you’re unsure whether or not it’s time for your baby’s first dental visit, contact our team of pediatric dental specialists. We can help.

What should you expect during your child's first dental visit?

Let’s be frank; there is not much happening in the baby’s mouth if your child’s first visit is scheduled before all the teeth erupt. However, as most of you may know, establishing routine & healthy habits is the basis for raising a happy and healthy child. Just like having the same daily bedtime routine is essential, having regular visits to a pediatric dentist in NYC builds healthy habits and gradually teaches your toddler that dental visits are nothing to be afraid of while reinforcing the importance of teeth brushing.

During your child’s first dental visit, one of our Manhattan pediatric dentists will examine your baby’s mouth for signs of proper development and potential signs of nursing decay. The dentist will review and advise on appropriate home hygiene.

How often should a child go to the dentist?

The American Dental Association and American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommend that adults and children visit the dentist every six months for dental check-ups and routine cleanings. After your child’s first visit with a pediatric dental specialist, this dentist will recommend the appropriate frequency for your child’s future appointments.

How to care for baby teeth?

Some may think that since baby teeth are not permanent, caring for them is optional. That’s not true. Baby teeth are essential in the development of speech, proper nutrition and digestion, and the development of permanent teeth. Thus, good home care should include cleaning your child’s baby teeth daily.

Nowadays, the market is full of products to care for baby teeth. Find what suits your style of parenting best. You can use a baby toothbrush or a soft cloth and water to clean your baby’s teeth. The most important thing to remember here is that you are building a lifelong habit, so do it regularly. With so many debates over fluoride, our NYC pediatric dentists recommend using fluoride at the age of 3 – 3.5 years old or when a child can rinse and spit out toothpaste.

How to prevent baby bottle tooth decay?

One of the most common dental problems dentists encounter when working with young children is baby bottle tooth decay. In the beginning, it appears as stained yellow discoloration between teeth or near the gum line. It is also known as nursing decay.

As the name suggests, baby bottle decay develops during nursing. To prevent dental caries, we strongly discourage parents from leaving a milk bottle in the baby’s crib and recommend substituting it for a water bottle. Both family and pediatric dentists in NYC are trained to treat baby bottle tooth decay.

When do baby teeth fall out?

An infographic discussing when a child’s teeth typically fall out

Typically, baby teeth loosen and fall out as permanent teeth start coming in when a child is about six years old. The change may take place as early as four years old or as late as eight. If your baby’s teeth erupted early, they are likely to fall out earlier. In case of late teethers, they may fall out later.

The process of primary teeth getting loose and permanent tooth erupting lasts several months. The full-mouth transition happens in a matter of several years, starting with the front incisors & ending with molars by the age of 12.

If you observe that baby teeth are not falling out and new teeth are coming in, please call our Manhattan pediatric dentists to book an appointment for your child. Your family or pediatric dentist in NYC may have to “assist” in this transition by making the baby tooth “go to sleep and sending it to the tooth fairy” so the “big boy or big girl tooth” could come out.

Does my child need braces before their baby teeth fall out?

We do not recommend braces before baby teeth fall out. There are cases when a special device, called a palatal expander, may be recommended for kids with baby teeth still present in preparation for braces. Your family or pediatric dentist in NYC will advise if there is a need for such a device and when to see an orthodontist.

What are the signs of teething in young children?

Besides seeing the presence of new teeth forming in your child’s mouth, there are other signs that teething is occurring. Children typically start teething around six months. You may notice your child drooling more than usual during this process. Other signs of teething include an increased desire to chew on objects like toys or being more irritable than normal.

Can excessive pacifier use or thumb sucking negatively affect my child’s teeth?

Yes. Either situation can cause your child’s teeth to become misaligned. If that happens, it could require more frequent visits to an NYC pediatric dentist. As pediatric dental specialists know, these habits may lead to future orthodontic issues for your child. Therefore, it’s best to discourage using a pacifier or sucking their thumbs by the time they’re 3 years old.

When should my child begin flossing their teeth?

It’s best for parents to help children floss their teeth starting at age two or three. That’s typically when a child’s teeth begin growing together. Teaching your child the importance of flossing early in life can set the foundation for someone who understands the importance of daily teeth cleaning.

How can I get my child to brush their teeth regularly?

There are many ways to encourage your children to brush their teeth. One idea is to play one of your child’s favorite songs (one that’s about two minutes) while they brush. Another option is to always brush your teeth with your child. Make it a fun daily event.

How do I know if my child needs braces?

An understandable concern NYC pediatric dentists face is deciding when braces could be a good idea for their younger patients. Common reasons for children to get braces can include:

  • Overbites
  • Underbites
  • Gapped teeth
  • Overlapping teeth
  • Problems chewing properly

When should my child transfer from a pediatric dental specialist to a general dentist?

209 NYC Dental always monitors how our patients’ dental needs change with age and other lifestyle-related factors. Typically, teenagers switch from seeing an NYC pediatric dentist to a general dentist when they reach 18.

Can’t say enough good things about this place. We found this place because my partner had a dental emergency and no insurance. We both have dentist phobias that have prevented us from keeping on top of our teeth cleanings etc. and so we don’t have a regular one to go to in situations like this. I looked for the highest rated dentist in the city on Google and found this place, which mentions specialty in caring for emergencies on their site. And so I got him in the door based on that. They spoke the truth! They were so kind, patient, caring and non judgmental for my partner, it made me want to go in for my own cleaning and care. Now we’ve referred several people since! I personally have been seeing Dr. Reddy, who is a gem of a human who seems to enjoy her work. my friends have seen other dentists here and we’ve all had the best experience here and think ours is the best. :) Since it was years since my cleaning, I did need some work done over the last couple months or so and I made it to all of them. Instead of anxiety and maybe occasionally postponing as I would do in the past, I almost looked forward to my appointments. They made all the costs and insurance coverage completely clear and transparent and gave me choices. I commute from Bushwick but it’s been so worth it. If you are looking for the dentist, this is your place!
