Pediatric Dentist in NYC

Pediatric Dentist Vs. General Dentist

A pediatric dentist is a “children’s dentist” who had additional post-graduate training. During this training, they learn how to best approach a child’s treatment especially how to work with kids who have a fear of dentists. They also learn additional procedures to address developmental dental concerns like “pacifier teeth.” Some children require special care of the pediatric dentist and finding the best pediatric dentist for a child may prevent not only problems with baby teeth but also eliminate a lifelong fear of dentistry.

Family dentistry is not a specialty trained in dental school, unlike pediatric dentistry.   A family dentist is a general dentist treating children and adults. To become the best family dentist, one must have the desire to provide general dentistry to patients of all ages; have a personality suitable to entertain a child on their first visit or to have a serious conversation with an adult. In addition, to become the best in children’s dentistry a family dentist must be versed in the dental procedures and all stages of development of the child’s mouth. A good family dentist can treat most of the children.

why you should see a family dentist

Seeing a family dentist vs. pediatric dentist for your family’s biannual checkup and cleaning is an easy decision since it does not require an additional trip but becomes a whole family event. Make it even better, follow it up with a brunch or trip to a museum on the weekend. Seeing a family dentist is an easy way to introduce the dentist into your child’s life, have them see you get a dental exam and cleaning.

Convenience is not the only concern that comes to mind when deciding on childcare. Consider the following factors when making such a decision:

  • Is your child cooperative with other adults and his or her pediatrician? If yes, going to a family dentist might be the right choice. If your child gets very uncomfortable, nervous and uncooperative; seeing a pediatric dentist and getting treatment under nitrate anesthesia could be a more suitable option in this case at least until your child outgrows the fear.
  • What are the doctor’s working hours? Usually, when we are choosing a doctor or a dentist, we think long term. Your child will start attending school at the age of 5. Pulling your kid out of school for a dental visit is not an option.  If you are a working parent, you have to consider your schedule and commute too. Late hours and weekends may be the most suitable option for your family. Look for a pediatric dentist open Saturday or Sunday.
  • Dental emergency happens not only to adults. Children are more active, play more sports and maybe still in the developmental stages of the physical dexterity. These factors, unfortunately, may contribute to children’s dental emergencies that often result in the broken tooth or a knocked out tooth. Warm water rinse and cold compress is only an interim solution while you find a children’s emergency dentist nearby. Make sure that your dentist is available for dental emergency visits.
  • Dental insurance often becomes a factor when choosing a doctor. Many pediatric dentists in NYC do not accept dental insurance. Ask the dentist if your insurance is accepted or maybe they will file the paperwork on your behalf, so you do not need to worry about it.
  • Location! Traveling with a little one or the whole family may become a difficult chore. Do not overlook it. Find a location that works.

What happens during a family dental checkup?

“A stitch in time saves nine,” we foster prevention of disease by offering biannual exams and cleanings, complete home care and diet instructions. We look at the total person, medical health histories, stress levels, and exercise routine. We want all our patients to be healthy and happy.

At 209 NYC Dental, we offer both adult and pediatric patients the most thorough dental checkups to help ensure any oral health issues are caught in its earliest and most treatable stages. Both adult and pediatric checkups begin with a medical history to look for any problems that could increase the risk of dental diseases, including diabetes, which can increase the chances for both tooth decay and gum disease.

Adult Dental Exam and Cleaning

Adult patients will be asked about any symptoms or problems they’ve been experiencing. The checkup will begin with a visual examination of the teeth and gums, followed by a cleaning and possibly dental x-rays. Dental x-rays are typically taken once a year. However, if there is a need, a single x-ray of the area in question may be taken. Next, each tooth will be carefully evaluated for signs of decay and your gums will be examined for gum disease. An oral cancer screening will also be performed. Then, you’ll learn about any problems you’re facing as well as your treatment options, and of course, you’ll have plenty of time to ask questions. Finally, you will be instructed as to how to brush, what toothbrush, rinse and dental floss is best suited for your needs. We will go over your diet, exercise and, if appropriate, the elimination of unwanted habits such as smoking and excessive drinking.

Pediatric Dental Checkup and Cleaning Visit

In a playful manner, our pediatric dentist will perform a dental exam to evaluate your child for developmental milestones, dental caries or any pathologies. After that, if your child is old enough, he will perform a dental cleaning with a prophy paste and a brush that “tickles” and a fluoride treatment to make teeth “super strong.” The dentist will review his findings and advise you on the home care. Sealants may be required to strengthen your child’s teeth.

Please be aware that depending on your child’s demeanor we may suggest for a parent to stay outside of the treatment room. At times kids will feel braver and more responsive to the doctor if the parent is out of sight.

You can schedule your child’s pediatric dental visit during Saturday & Sunday hours in addition to the weekdays.

How to prepare your child to a dental visit?

There are few things a parent can do to ease the angst of the children’s dentist visit. Role-playing “dentist-patient” is an excellent way to prepare your child for the upcoming appointment. Count each other’s teeth while looking in the mirror.

How to prepare your child to a dental visit?

FAQs

When to have a baby’s first dental visit?

According to the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, AAPD, the first dental visit should take place at the age of one or when the first tooth erupts.

What to expect during the first dental visit?

Let’s be frank; there is not much happening in the baby’s mouth if your child’s first visit is scheduled before all the teeth erupted. However, as most of you may know establishing routine & healthy habits is the basis for raising a happy and healthy child. Just like having the same daily bedtime routine is essential, having regular dental visits builds a healthy habit & gradually teaches your toddler that dental visits are nothing to be afraid of as well as reinforces the importance of brushing teeth when they can do it themselves.

During your child’s first dental visit the family or pediatric dentist will examine your baby’s mouth for signs of proper development and potential signs of nursing decay. The dentist will review and advise on proper home hygiene.

How often should a child go to the dentist?

The American Dental Association and American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommend both adults and children visit the dentist every six months to have dental checkups and routine cleanings. After your first pediatric dental visit, your dentist will recommend the appropriate frequency for your child’s appointments.

How to care for baby teeth?

Some may think that since baby teeth are not permanent, the care for them is optional. Baby teeth are essential in the development of speech, proper nutrition and digestion, and development of the permanent teeth. Thus good home care that includes daily cleaning of baby teeth is required. Nowadays the market is full of products to care for baby teeth. Find what suits your style of parenting best. You can use baby toothbrush or cloths and water. The most important thing to remember here is that you are building a lifelong habit, so do it regularly. With so many debates over fluoride, we recommend using fluoride at the age of 3 – 3.5 years old or when a child can rinse and spit out toothpaste.

How to prevent baby bottle tooth decay?

The most common dental problems that dentists face when working with young children are baby bottle tooth decay. In the beginning, it appears as stained yellow discoloration between teeth or near the gum line. Often it is also referred to as nursing decay. As the name speaks for itself, the baby bottle decay develops as a result of the nursing. To prevent dental caries, we strongly discourage parents from leaving a milk bottle in the baby’s crib. We recommend substituting milk bottle for a water bottle.  Both pediatric dentist and family dentist are trained to treat baby bottle tooth decay.

When do baby teeth fall out?

when will my child's teeth come in and fall out

Typically baby teeth get loose, fall out, and permanent teeth start coming in around six years old. The change may take place as early as four years old or as late as 8. If your baby’s teeth erupted early, they are likely to fall out earlier. In case of late teethers, they may fall out later. The process of primary tooth getting loose and permanent tooth erupting lasts several months. The full mouth transition happens in a matter of several years starting with the front incisors & ending with molars by the age of 12. If you observe that baby teeth not falling out and new teeth are coming in, please call the dental office to book an appointment for your child. Your family or pediatric dentist may have to “assist” in this transition by making the baby tooth “go to sleep and sending it to the tooth fairy” so the “big boy or big girl tooth” could come out.

Braces before baby teeth fall out

We do not recommend braces before baby teeth fall out. There are cases when a special device, called palatal expander, may be recommended for kids with baby teeth still present in preparation for braces. Your family or pediatric dentist will advise if there is a need in such a device and when to see an orthodontist.

Emergency Pediatric Dentist NYC

In the unfortunate event, if a child is experiencing a dental emergency, in our family dental clinic an appointment with a children’s emergency dentist can be scheduled not only Monday through Friday. As we explain in detail in the article Dental Emergency NYC, even in the city that never sleeps finding a 24 hour emergency pediatric dentist nearby can be a significant challenge. Can’t say enough good things about this place. We found this place because my partner had a dental emergency and no insurance. We both have dentist phobias that have prevented us from keeping on top of our teeth cleanings etc. and so we don’t have a regular one to go to in situations like this. I looked for the highest rated dentist in the city on Google and found this place, which mentions specialty in caring for emergencies on their site. And so I got him in the door based on that. They spoke the truth! They were so kind, patient, caring and non judgmental for my partner, it made me want to go in for my own cleaning and care. Now we’ve referred several people since! I personally have been seeing Dr. Reddy, who is a gem of a human who seems to enjoy her work. my friends have seen other dentists here and we’ve all had the best experience here and think ours is the best. :) Since it was years since my cleaning, I did need some work done over the last couple months or so and I made it to all of them. Instead of anxiety and maybe occasionally postponing as I would do in the past, I almost looked forward to my appointments. They made all the costs and insurance coverage completely clear and transparent and gave me choices. I commute from Bushwick but it’s been so worth it. If you are looking for the dentist, this is your place!
