Dental Deep Cleaning (SRP)
Dental Deep Cleaning / Scaling Root Planing
Scaling and root planing or dental deep cleaning, as it is often called, is essential in the battle against gum disease. It is the first treatment provided to patients with early to advanced stages of gum disease. At his practice in Midtown East Manhattan, Dr. Wang and his expert hygienists offer New York City patients the safest and effective root planing and scaling techniques to help them stop gum disease from progression and avoid tooth loss.
Dental Deep Cleaning
Dental deep cleaning is a nonsurgical periodontal treatment that consists of two techniques that are used to treat early to advanced stages of gum disease. Both techniques are designed to reach below the gum line, helping to remove tartar and eradicate the bacteria that build up near and around the tooth root. Scaling is the name for the technique used to remove bacteria buildup below the gum line, while root planing describes a technique used to smooth rough spots that may form on the surface of the root area, making it more difficult for bacteria to grab on to the tooth.

What happens during a Dentist Deep Cleaning?
It is performed by our hygienists and board certified periodontist, Dr. Jin Wang. Dental deep cleaning requires two visits to complete. Root planing and scaling can be performed using a local anesthetic to reduce discomfort, especially when the gums are very inflamed. However, many patients do well with topical desensitizer.During the procedure, special manual instruments, called scalers will be used to reach below the gums to remove bacteria, plaque, and tartar and restore the health of the gum tissues and teeth. Once the cleaning is complete and debris has been removed, a special antibiotic, Arestin, may be placed to the treated areas to help kill bacteria that are difficult to reach with the instruments and to provide protection against gum disease progression.
What is Arestin therapy?
Arestin is a type of antibiotic that was developed specifically to fight the bacteria that cause gum disease. In Arestin therapy, the antibiotic is applied to the areas affected by gum disease, usually during root planing and scaling, to kill bacteria that cannot be reached by usual cleaning methods.
